Within perfumery, there are many different fragrance notes. These can be fragrance notes that are self conceived and created by synthetic compounds but also derived from the natural origin. In this blog we are going to talk about the Magnolia.
Most know the Magnolia as the beautiful tree with tulip-shaped flowers in pink, white or purple but from the flowers of this tree is also made fragrance oil. Within the Magnolia group there are several species. The species used to make fragrance oil is the Magnolia Grandiflora but like almost every other fragrance oil, Magnolia is available in both essential and synthetic varieties. Magnolia has a sweet, delicate fragrance. The scent is somewhat reminiscent of fresh neroli, powdery violets and roses.
The fragrance oil is obtained by steam distillation. The flowers of the Magnolia are put under great pressure by steam. This releases the volatile parts and this is then cooled again. The different substances begin to separate, leaving the oil layer floating on the scented water (hydrolate). The essential oil is known for its regenerating effect on the skin. It will renew and even out your skin.
The smell of magnolia has an uplifting effect and especially when mixed with other fragrance notes, it will have a positive effect on your mood. Magnolia is found in several women's and unisex fragrances. Some fragrances in which Magnolia is most noticeable are:
